Patrick’s Day, we decided to sponsor a “Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day” celebration in September”, adds Sara. “It’s like a “tease”—people enjoy getting to celebrate this Irish holiday with the traditional green beer, mu- sic and food twice a year!”
This year, the Day of the Irish will be celebrat- ed on Saturday, September 18, commencing at 1:30pm with an extra-special Irish blessing and toast by two 4th-generation Put-in- Bay summer residents, Bill Boag and Jim French. “These two gentlemen are long-time best friends, and are our very best and loyal customers who are always first through the door!” shares Sara. At 1:45pm, the traditional Irish parade line-up begins. Kids and adults alike are invited to dress up in Irish garb, deco- ratetheirgolfcartswithan Irish theme, and join in the 2pm procession which will include the traditional Hoo- ligans float and the 87th Cleveland Pipe and Drum Band.
The Irish hooley on the island will continue through the evening at Hooligans with tradition- al Irish grub, music and of course green beer. “All of
Chef Marie’s house recipes will be on the menu, includ- ing her classic Shepherd Pie, Murphy’s Onion Soup, traditional Irish Meatloaf with a hard-boiled egg in the middle, and delicious desserts from scratch,” notes Sara.
“Halfway to St. Pat- rick’s Day 2021” on Put- in-Bay promises to be full of the festivities and mer- riment that express the very soul of Ireland. No doubt the spirit of Hooli- gans’ beloved friend and Irishman, Patrick Myers, will be present throughout. “One of my fondest memo- ries of past Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day celebrations is when Patrick dressed up as St. Patrick with a beard and staff, and led the Irish parade,” remembers Sara. Patrick is now hon- ored with a special bronze plaque at Hooligans, his favorite “Irish Pub with a Snug and Music and Grub.”

Green beer, bagpipes, tra- ditional Irish food and a colorful, lively parade draw crowds of locals and visitors who want to celebrate the Irish culture and, in many cases, honor their Irish roots.
“Halfway to St. Pat- rick’s Day has been a tra- dition for us since opening Hooligans,” explains Sara Booker of the Booker Fam- ily of Restaurants. “My father Marvin Booker and I traveled to Ireland to do
research before building the pub, and so we real- ly wanted Hooligans to represent authentic Irish culture.” She points out that Hooligans is not only the sole authentic Irish pub on Put-in-Bay, but it also proudly offers an authentic “snug” where customers can sip their whiskey and knock down their pints and grub in a warm and homey atmo- sphere. “And, since we are not open in March for St.
Soap Company and their handcrafted organic soaps and products, artists and craft-work from around Ohio, local honey, essential oils, candles, canned items and gift items galore.
If you are a boater, vis- it Anchors Away Marina and learn more about their boat docks and marine ser- vices. You can also enjoy a meal overlooking the ma- rina at Crabby Joe’s or the Crow’s Nest restaurants.
During November, the Marblehead Merchants Group (find out more on their Facebook page) cele- brates Shop Local Satur- day on November 27, the day after Black Friday. This day, is tra- ditionally “Rival-
Tailgate where shoppers enjoy breakfast inspired refreshments on the morn- ing of the “big game.” Wear your favorite team colors for special discounts.
Perhaps one of the loveliest events held by Marblehead merchants is the Village Lights cel- ebration for the holidays. Being held on December 4, Village Lights is the longest running event in Marblehead, Redfern said. Luminairies light up downtown and there are libations and door prizes at many of the businesses. “It’s a great weekend to find unique gifts and enjoy the holidays,” she added.
