Meet Our Readers:
Tim Rotsinger, Sandusky By Brenda Haas, Feature Writer
Samba Joia Comes To RiverFront Live!
With over three de- cades in the commercial in- dustry, ferry boat Captain Tim Rotsinger, of Castalia, remembers his interest in boats began with his fa- ther’s Lyman.
“Everything I do, I put my heart and soul into,”
said Tim, who restored his own 24’ Ly- man. “If it’s worth do- ing...it’s got to be done well.” He at- tributes his work ethic to his parents and earliest job experi- ence. His first season with the Neuman Boat Line, in 1981, con- vinced him to pursue a career on the lake.
“John Neu- man took a chance on an 18-year-old kid and gave me a lot of knowledge,” said Tim. That early work experience taught Tim to give his word—with a firm
handshake—and look a person in the eye.
Ferrying people, livestock, or even North Bass grapes, Tim captained Neuman’s boats, until 2002. He moved on to be a Cap- tain on Cleveland’s Nautica Queen, aided Homeland Se- curity in developing port se- curity plans, delivered pri- vate vessels throughout the Great Lakes, and eventu- ally landed on Catawba Is- land Club’s vessel GEMINI. Active with Winous Point Shooting Club, his hobbies also include music, ice fish- ing, and ice sailing. He and Janet, his wife of 30+ years,
have two children.
“I’m glad the path
that I went down was the right one,” said Tim, who now manages Sandusky’s Son Rise Marina. “As an American, you have an op- portunity...Make the best of your opportunities.”
Firelands Symphony Orchestra (FSO) proud- ly presents a free, public concert by Samba Joia, an Afro-Brazilian percussion ensemble, on Friday, Sep- tember. 4, from 6 - 7:15 p.m. at Port Clinton’s RiverFront Live located at the Meals on Madison (M.O.M.) outdoor dining and entertainment space. In addition, FSO’s Maestro Carl Topilow will make a special appearance on his clarinet to perform a few selections with Samba Joia.
Made possible through a grant from the Ottawa County Community Foun- dation, the concert is co- ordinated in partnership with the Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Port Clinton. The concert will be im- mediately followed by a Port Clinton High School football game watch party streamed on a 20-foot blow-
up screen.
Led by the FSO’s prin-
cipal percussionist, Dylan Moffitt, Samba Joia has reached audiences through Brazil’s rich and diverse rhythmic culture for over a decade. Specializing in the samba reggae and samba batucada styles, the en- semble aims to provide an engaging and interactive experience for all one beat at a time. They are a mix of musicians, from students to community members to professional level players, ages 12-60, who share the same love of the warm Bra- zilian culture.
Often recognized for his versatility as a percus- sionist in the classical and
world mu-
sic genres,
in 2013,
Dylan
founded his “Drumming with Dylan” education- al outreach program with the FSO. The program has since been recognized by the Cleveland Orchestra and was featured in the orchestra’s “At Home” resi- dency. Dylan performs reg- ularly with the Wheeling Symphony, Pittsburgh Op- era, Ohio Valley Sympho- ny, Blossom Festival Band, Apollo’s Fire, the Cleveland Chamber Collective and has in past years appeared with the Cleveland Orches- tra.
Having recently re- turned from travels to Cuba, South India, Dylan specializes in various styles of world music, particularly Brazilian percussion.
