Do keep in mind that while most fish may be holding
at 12 feet or 15 or whatever, sometimes the biggest old mossbacks will be laying with their bellies almost brushing mud, so let the spinner sink to nearly bottom before starting a retrieve. A worm harness can be a good producer too, especially if there’s enough wind to keep their spinner blades turning. Then, instead of casting repeatedly, bringing the lure up through the fish holding zone for only a minute or two, you can leave it down there full time, moving your rod tip a little up or down occasionally to impart more action.
Some anglers like to use a half ounce jig with a nightcrawler on the hook for their casting, and these can

walleyes, and one is to go out on a headboat. that might hold 30-40 people. There are lots of these with possibly the bulk based in Port Clinton at places from Fisherman’s Wharf to the Sassy Sal and Drawbridge Marina. You can Google up headboats and get a full list, or maybe call the Ottawa County Visitors Bureau at 800-441-1271 for a full list.
One more choice is to hire a six pack which is a boat that will hold up to six anglers along with a captain.
Here’s a final thought: almost everybody fishes during the day, but walleyes are actively feeding during the night and sometimes come right up on the reefs chasing bait fish. Casting or trolling will both work then and you can fish much closer to shore. It makes a good Plan B.

produce, too. But May and June walleye can sometimes be gentle biters, just tapping the tail end of the worm once or twice, then letting go before you can strike. So, it’s wise to have a stinger hook handy when that happens. This is just a few inches of monofilament and a very small hook that you slip onto your jig hook and attach the small hook to the end of the trailing worm.
Another option is to troll for your catch, using downriggers, planer boards, and as many rods as the law allows with spoons and crankbaits placed at various depths in the fish zone. Many fishermen don’t like trolling which can be something close to watching grass grow and paint dry, but it will usually out produce casting simply because your lures are in the water and working all of the time, instead of for only a minute or two. Trolling also keeps lures in new water constantly, which means that even if you cross through dead zones occasionally, you’re almost sure to pass over pods of fish now and then.
