Local Libraries Offer Book
Groups For Adult Readers By Nancy Heller, Feature Writer
often tackle hard topics,” Estel explained. Based on readers’ input, the library plans some ‘lighter reads’ groups this summer.
Sandusky Library ob- tains multiple copies of each featured book and or- ders books in large print, ebook, and audio book formats. Readers can of- ten download books onto their Kindles through the library’s website.
Both Sandusky and Ida Rupp libraries provide large print, regular, and audio books for private and church book clubs, such as Sandusky’s First Congre- gational UCC’s book club. The club serves residents of Parkvue Health Care Center and apartments, as well as church mem- bers. According to Rever- end Lenore Kure, most of the club’s members are in their 80’s and 90’s. “Even though we are a church, many of the books we se- lect aren’t religious,” Kure noted.
More information about book discussions and groups is available at the libraries or online at www. idarupp.org and www.san- dusky.lib.oh.us.
Our region has plenty of opportunities for bibliophiles to meet and discuss their fa- vorite books. From mysteries to histories, and current events to lighter fiction, area libraries offer numerous book clubs and discussion groups for fans of every literary genre.
Ida Rupp Public Library in Port Clinton offers free, year- round book groups for adults. Lauren Lemmon, the library’s assistant director, facilitates a monthly book discussion fo- cused on mysteries. On the 1st Thursday of every month at 7:00 PM, mystery buffs gather at the library in Port Clinton to discuss everything from tra- ditional detective mysteries to suspense thrillers. On the 4th Friday of each month at 10:00 AM, Lemmon leads a group that focuses mostly on fiction. The featured books are often relevant to current events, such as a recent selection about wildfires.
“I make sure the books are available in regular print, large print, and audio formats. The groups are casual, and new members are always wel- come,” Lemmon noted. “Read-
ers don’t have to commit to coming every month. They can check out the book, and if it’s interesting, come to the group.”
Mary Breymaier, Adult Outreach Coordinator, fa- cilitates a nonfiction book club at Ida Rupp called “Just the Facts”, as well as monthly book groups at Otterbein North Shore and The Vineyard at Catawba. “We have sophisticated readers,” Breymaier said. “Everyone sees different things, and members bring out points the others may not have considered.” The outreach groups are open to all residents of the re- tirement communities and anyone else who’s interest- ed.
Laura Vollmer, Read- ers’ Advisory Coordina- tor at Ida Rupp, leads a monthly group called “Page to Screen,” when readers discuss books that have been made into movies. Is the book always better than the movie? Join the group to find out.
Laura also facilitates
three local private book clubs with access to li- brary materials for their meetings.
Sandusky Library has monthly book dis- cussions at the main library throughout the year, and summers will find readers at the li- brary’s Kelleys Island branch engrossed in book groups. Terri Estel, Director of Operations at Sandusky Library, co- ordinates the adult book discussion program. “We offer evening book dis- cussions once a month on a variety of topics,” Estel said. “People can come to the groups be- fore they read the book, or they can read the book first.”
Estel said that the book discussion groups draw 15-30 adults each month. Groups are led by library staff or topic experts such as college professors. “We cover a wide range of topics, from Japanese litera- ture to the Civil War. We

Danbury Township Fire Chief Keith Kahler, his Fire Team, and Police Officers Charlie Cunning- ham and Josh Young vis- ited African Safari Wildlife Park recently for a special tour.
Chief Kahler, his fire- fighters, the two Officers, along with African Safari management and Owners toured the grounds while meeting Staff, seeing the collection of over 400 an- imals, and discussing the Park’s emergency proce- dures.
“Having a close re- lationship with the Fire Chief and Law Enforce- ment in our Township is very important to us as a
local business,” said Park Foreman, Josh Adkins. “Doing these in-depth tours with the Fire Department and Police helps them to more accurately respond to an emergency situation, should one occur. They know our animals, the key Staff, and the layout of the Park. We know we’re in good hands.”
This year, African Sa- fari Wildlife Park is cele- brating its 50th Season in operation. New exhibits and animals will be avail- able to Guests after Moth- er’s Day weekend, some- thing the Fire Chief and local law enforcement were made aware of.
The newest exhibit,
Aviary Adventure, is sched- uled to open Mother’s Day weekend, 2018. The Park’s first Extended Weekend is the same weekend, with Camel Rides and Educa- tional Animal Programs being available on both May 12 and 13. The first Summer Season day for the Park is May 25.
The Midwest’s only Drive-Thru Safari, African Safari Wildlife Park, is lo- cated at 267 S. Lightner Rd. in Port Clinton, Ohio. It is open daily through Decem- ber 2nd, 2018. Go to www. AfricanSafariWildlifePark. com or phone 1-800-521- 2660 for more information.
