Biggest Week In American
Birding
Birding enthusiasts from all over the world come to the Black Swamp Bird Observatory – and several other areas – for Biggest Week in American Birding, May 4 through 13. Even if you’ve never tried birdwatching before, you might want to give it a try. Lectures, bus tours, and other events are available for newcomers and experienced watchers. A few years ago, I went to the boardwalk at Magee Marsh, the hotspot for seeing birds as they pause on their annual migration. I was working on a news story, and knew nothing about birding. The people there were warm and welcoming, and seemed to truly enjoy sharing what they knew. Check the Biggest Week in American Birding website for event information.
Put-in-Bay Music Fest
Kick off the summer with some great reasons to visit Put-in-Bay. The Second Annual Put-in-Bay Music Festival is Saturday, June 9. It is a family-friendly event that will feature a huge range of music from bluegrass to zydeco. (This sentence would have been much cooler if I could come up with a type of music that starts with an “A.” Sorry, readers).
NIAGARA Schedules Visits
The U.S. Brig Niagara will be at Put-in-Bay June 15 through 17, 23 through 25 (coinciding with the “Pyrate Fest X” event) and August 20-22. I had the opportunity to sail on one of the “tall ships” – not the Niagara, unfortunately, during the re-enactment
of the Battle of Lake Erie a few years ago.
I was fascinated by the way the crew
operated, sometimes climbing masts to breathtaking heights.
