Bottled and available for purchase, these spirits are also the foundation for an impressive list of smooth cocktails made in-house. Clinking glasses and cheering to a great day on the island is made more fun when done with a signature Bahama Mama, a Long Island, a Storm the Bay or a Tom Dailey. “Our most popular cocktail this year is the Tom Dailey,” say Carl and Chris. “It is made with our Island Vodka, and pays tribute to our longtime friend and GM who is currently battling cancer.”
Silver anniversaries, whether of the marriage kind or the business kind, are celebrations of commitment, passion, growth, love and ultimately, success. Carl and Chris share how, over the last 25 years, their partnership has worked to create a solid and vibrant island brewery and distillery: “Working together as a husband-and- wife team is both challenging and rewarding. Carl is the Master Brewer and Master Distiller. Chris manages the office and retail side of the operation. We balance each other well, as Carl is the dreamer, and Chris is the realist. We have two amazing daughters, a great “brew crew” and we thrive on our regular customers. They make it all worth it! Our advice to others on our silver anniversary? JUST BREW IT!”
The uniqueness of Put-in-Bay Brewery and Distillery has earned it a spot on the Lake Erie Shores and Islands “Cheers Trail”. Nineteen different breweries, wineries and distilleries along Ohio’s north coast are featured on the trail, perfect for an afternoon of sampling the art of brewing, distilling and wine-making on our shores and islands.
An historic brick building
historical feel of the building. “We love the red brick. It pays tribute to fire houses everywhere!” Chris exclaims, noting that Carl is a long-time Put-in-Bay volunteer firefighter.
These days, the Put-in-Bay Brewery and Distillery is a “must do” for both locals and visitors who enjoy craft brews and island spirits. From the original refreshing Summer Brew, to tasty fruit beers like Watermelon Wheat, to heartier stouts such as Pass Out Bourbon Stout, there is a brew for everyone. Additionally, the brewery embraces the fall season with the production of Pumpkin Spice Lager and Oktoberfest. All of the beers crafted in- house pair wonderfully with mouth-watering signature dishes from the full lunch and dinner menu. For those who want to enjoy or share a brew at home, they may purchase it to go in a unique growler or crowler.
When Master Brewer Carl puts on his Master Distiller hat, all kinds of magic happens at the copper kettle. Island Vodka, Island Rum and Island Bourbon share the honor of being crafted with pride at Put-in-Bay’s only distillery.
